What is Hijama Cupping

“Al Hijama” comes from “Al Hajm”, which means to “restore to the original size” or to “diminish volume” and “to Suck”. Hijama Cupping is a Holistic Detox and Cell cleansing procedure using cupping equipment, applications, suction and negative pressure and by making small incisions. This draws a minimal amount of toxic blood to the surface of the skin from the capillaries. It is a spiritual healing method to relieve various conditions in the mind, body and soul of the client. Cupping therapy is a therapeutic treatment practiced for thousands of years and is also used to relieve metaphysical issues. Cupping is spread to many nations around the world over time. The first documented records of its practice were found in the 19th century, 1550 BC; the “Ebers Papyrus” originating in Egypt. The Chinese have predominantly also practiced Cupping Therapy for about 5000 years. They developed it in the field of acupuncture. Hijama Cupping Therapy was established over 1400 years ago, during the advent of Islam in Arabia. Muslims practice Hijama, based on what was ordained by Allah (The Exalted) and practiced by our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him).

What is the process of Cupping

Small, superficial cuts are made on the skin that is being cupped. The suction pressure under the cup would then stimulate the toxic or unhealthy blood to trickle out and cleanse the diseased or inflamed area of pain on the body. This diminishes the volumes of excess toxic fluids and humours in the body. It serves to cleanse, normalize, alkalize, and create “Homeostasis” (Balance) within the body. It increases circulation, and thus, the body’s ability to detoxify naturally.

How does Cupping work physically

Cupping therapy pulls the tissues up. When the localized vacuum is created inside the cup, a powerful negative pressure literally sucks up the components within the tissues and muscles and causes vasodilatation. Thus, there is a dramatic increase in blood and lymph circulation. By pulling the flesh up and outwards from the underlying structures, it facilitates rigid soft tissue release and the ability to recover from pain and injuries quickly. It loosens areas of adhesion, restriction and tension “knots”. It stimulates synovial fluids which then ease stiffness in joints and sore muscles. It also tonifies and strengthens muscles. A ten minute, heavy, moving cupping session can increase the heart rate and may be equivalent to brisk walking. A Client can literally lie still on the table and do nothing, but have cupping done half an hour. Yet, when they leave, their internal physiology will be the same as a person who has done an aerobic workout at the gym.
Cupping therapy penetrates deep into the body and promotes blood circulation and nourishment to all the internal organs. It strengthens the immune system and increases the white blood cell count. When the localized ecchymosis or congestion occurs, the body thinks it is hurt. So, the immune system sends out more white blood cells to heal the area quickly. It engages the parasympathetic nervous system which increases relaxation and promotes pain relief. Cupping therapy stimulates the nervous system reflex to the cerebral cortex and aids in faster recovery from sickness and pain.

Cupping therapy increases both the temperature and metabolism within the skin. It is excellent for facelifts and rejuvenating the complexion. Cupping allows efficient functioning of sebaceous glands and flushing capillary beds. Thus, it drains stagnant blood, toxins and lymph through sweat urine and stool. Sucks out fatty acids, debris and toxins which have harmfully settled in the tissues. It forces them back in to circulation. These will eventually be expelled by the body naturally at some point. It allows the ample flow of vital nutrients throughout the body.

Benefits of Hijama as outlined by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

• “Hijama is the most helpful procedure for human beings to cure themselves.” (Reference: Al Bukhari, 5357)

•“Cupping on the back of the neck treats  72 illnesses” (Collected by At-‐Tabarani).

What is the skin coloration

The skin coloration created by cupping is “Ecchymosis” it is caused by increased blood circulation and vasodilation of the blood vessels under the subcutaneous skin (due to the suction of cupping). It is not caused by trauma. It is not a Hematoma or bruising which is painful and typically caused by trauma.

Benefits of Hijama Wet Cupping?

Cupping Therapy is a natural, holistic, preventative and curative treatment. This treatment is beneficial for everyone with any illness or condition and has been practiced for thousands of years. It boosts the circulatory and immune systems, cleanses and detoxifies the body, treats all illness and relaxes the Client. Hijama Wet Cupping increases the red and white blood cell counts in the body by removing dead blood cells and toxins, and producing new blood cells. So acidic blood will eventually become neutral or more alkaline, and a natural pH balance will be attained. This is very useful if a client has acidic, thick, or stagnant blood. Hijama will deacidify and eventually thin the blood, thus enable it to circulate around the body effectively. It purifies blood and facilitates both blood flow and energy to diseased organs and tissues. Hijama serves to normalize and balance the human body. It creates homeostasis as it sheds the body of toxins. This is beneficial because 70% of diseases occur because of poor blood and oxygen supply to certain organs and tissues. Hijama takes toxic blood and debris directly from the capillaries in the skin, which are all connected to these organs, veins, arteries, muscles and tissues.

In Holistic Islamic Medicine, the main foundations are:
• Mindset and spiritual outlook; positivity, gratitude.
• Prayer, faith, hope and worship.
• Food, Diet & Herbs.
• Detox, cleanse and balance of mind, body and soul.
• Hijama & Ruqyah (Quranic Therapy)
• Exercise.
Al Hijama is committed to promoting natural healing through by obtaining cellular health through oxygenation, detox, cleansing, lymphatic drainage. We also try to promote you to reach oxygenation, detoxing and alkalizing the body externally through cupping and internally through diet, water, oxygen, herbs and exercise.

How often should you do Cupping?

Everyone needs to have a Hijama detox even if they are healthy. The average recommended sessions according to the hadith is 2 to 4 times a year. But even if someone is healthy, and they have never had Hijama performed upon them at all, they should get a 3 Week Sectional Hijama Cleanse as a kickstarter. The Catch-Up Theory is basically the idea that everyone is ill or toxic to some degree, regardless of how healthy they are. So, each Client should undergo a Hijama Detox immediately to cleanse themselves, even if they are in good health This is because in these modern times, we have more exposure to toxins from a very early age and so our bodies are predisposed to excessive levels of toxicity, acidity, external pathogens, free radicals, disease, and heavy metals. There is even more need to “Catch Up” and get a detox done as quickly as possible and as often as possible.

Sunnah Days

The following days are ideal to perform Cupping therapy on the body. Sunnah days are the 17th, 19th, or 21st of the Lunar Calendar. These sunnah dates for hijama have great significance in our Islamic religion. The combination of the 17th, 19th, and 21st with Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday are the best for Hijama.
